Beyond the Handshake: How to Build Business Connections Through Deep Listening

By Federico Giller

In today’s fast-paced business world, meaningful connections go beyond a handshake. True relationships are forged by deeply listening and understanding the core of others’ businesses. By discovering the story behind the business, their WHY, their inner dynamics, you build genuine rapport. Taking the time to understand the practical nuts and bolts, the quantitative aspect of what makes the business successful (or not) gives you a deep understanding of the business, its goals and aspirations. The combination of quantitative and qualitative elements provides a roadmap for true collaboration—whether as a client, partner, associate, or referral.

There’s only one prerequisite — you’ve got to get out of your way and stop thinking about yourself and how you are going to make a buck from this interaction. I hope these ideas inspire you to take on a new approach. Dive into the art of listening and transform your business networking into a powerful, trust-building tool that fosters long-lasting success.

Be Respectfully Inquisitive

Listening attentively allows you to uncover the intricate details of another’s business. By understanding their processes, challenges, and goals, you position yourself as a valuable resource. This process shows your genuine interest and enables you to offer tailored solutions that can significantly impact their success. Add value!

Tap Into the Heart Behind Their Operation

Delving into the core beliefs and motivations behind a business reveals why they do what they do. This deeper understanding fosters authentic connections, as you empathize with their passion and vision. You demonstrate that you see them as more than your next business opportunity.

Let the Path Be Revealed

By grasping the operational and emotional aspects of a business, you gain a comprehensive view that guides your next steps. What have you discovered, can they become a client, a partner, an associate, is there someone you can refer to them that would help them achieve their business goals? The insight you gather allows you to make informed, strategic decisions that align your mutual goals. It opens a path to collaborative success.

Ask, Don’t Babble

My mentor, the late Tom Feltenstein, marketing legend to Fortune 500 companies in the food service and hospitality industries, taught me that the number one skill in building a business is to ask questions. He emphasized the 80/20 rule: let the other person speak 80% of the time, you speak 20%. Of your speaking time, 80% should be asking follow-up questions. This approach should feel like a natural, driven conversation, not a lawyer’s interrogation. Tom’s guidance instilled in me the importance of genuine curiosity and active listening, which have been invaluable in forming deep, meaningful business connections.

The AHA Moment

By deeply listening, you discover possibilities for the business owner, yourself, and the potential relationship. Whether it’s a good fit or not, you’ve identified how best to help them. If you take nothing else from this article, remember this: Shift your intent from “How am I going to make a buck from this?” to – “How can I add value?” If anything, it will chill your demeanor and reduce the natural anxiety around performing.

When you focus on creating value, opportunities, and possibilities emerge naturally. This mindset transforms networking from a transactional activity into a journey of mutual growth and opportunity. Try it, and let me know how it goes!
